Disabled Child

Supplemental Security Income for Disabled or Blind Children

To be eligible, a disabled or blind child must not be married nor head of a household. The disabled or blind child must also be under age 18 or under age 22 and a student regularly attending school. When the child attains age 18, SSA will evaluate impairments based on the definition of disability for adults. See rules for Disabled Adults here.

How is disability determined for a minor child? The child must have medically determinable physical or mental impairments which result in marked and severe functional limitations for at least 12 months or be expected to result in death.
